Young carers

Many young people provide care for another person, often a parent or brother or sister.

As a young carer you may feel you are missing out on other opportunities as you have to spend so much time and energy caring for family members who are disabled or chronically ill, or for adults who are misusing alcohol or drugs.

Many young carers suffer from anxiety and exhaustion because of the pressure of taking on adult responsibilities.

You are not alone there are about 700,000 young carers across the country (Carer’s Trust).

As a young carer you might help with:

  • practical tasks like cooking, housework and shopping
  • physical tasks, like getting out of bed
  •  personal care, such as helping someone get washed or dressed
  • giving medicine
  • looking after brothers and sisters
  • A young carer is someone under 18 who provides care for someone who is ill, disabled or has other problems.

There is lots of information and support for young carers on the NHS website.

  • Imago runs a specialised young carers service on behalf of the council which supports young carers between the ages of 8-18.
  • Make a referral online
  • For further information visit the Imago website.
  • If you are a young carer and need help requesting an assessment why not ask a friend, family member or a teacher.
  • If you need to talk about something you can always contact Childline.
